The Data-Sharing License by ADBEx is a new online tool that helps data custodians clearly define and communicate conditions for responsible data re-use. Inspired by Creative Commons, it generates human- and machine-readable licenses, customised icons, and embeddable summaries to support transparent, equitable, and accountable data sharing.

This blog post explores how researchers can build equity and sustainability into their work by sharing the benefits of research in meaningful, practical ways. Drawing on a socio-ecological model, it highlights options like training and capacity building, investing in local infrastructure, collaboration with primary data generators, and strengthening health systems. By thinking beyond financial benefits, researchers can ensure that individuals, institutions, and communities that contributed to creating research resources also share in the gains, helping to build long-term capacity, trust, and impact.

The African Data and Biospecimen Exchange, ADBEx, is a data- and biospecimen-sharing platform that supports researchers in sharing data and biospecimens from Africa in ways that are more equitable and ethical. ADBEx supports fair research partnerships whilst improving availability of data and biospecimens from Africa: It increases visibility of African resources without ceding oversight by African researchers, building capacity within Africa, and helping African researchers participate equitably in the science that their data and biospecimens make possible.

This post introduces four flexible models for sharing research resources; direct sharing, collaborative sharing, federated analysis, and trusted research environments (TREs). By exploring these fit-for-purpose approaches, researchers can choose methods that align with ethical, legal, and practical considerations, especially when working with sensitive data or biospecimens. ADBEx supports all these models to promote equitable and secure research collaboration.
